Preventive Care

The physicians at Clinicas Mi Salud are experienced primary care providers who aim to ensure you are in optimal health.

Through routine health checks, our physicians can perform various health screenings and provide immunizations to prevent you from contracting contagious diseases such as influenza or pneumonia. They can also perform routine blood work to check the effectiveness of your medication, evaluate your hormone levels, and determine if you’re at risk for developing high cholesterol, diabetes, or heart disease.

We provide the following services:

It is normal for the liver to contain some fat. However, it becomes an issue when the fat accounts for more than 10% of the liver’s weight. Excess fat can lead to inflammation of the liver, which is commonly indicated through a liver blood test called ALT (Alanine aminotransferase). A fatty liver can result from heavy alcohol consumption but, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) results from other factors besides excessive alcohol use.

Symptoms
Most people with a fatty liver may not experience any symptoms. However, if NAFLD progresses to the point of cirrhosis (liver failure), symptoms (e.g., yellowing of the skin [jaundice], fatigue, abdominal pain, and unexpected weight loss) may become more noticeable.

FibroScan Test
In the past, liver biopsy was the gold standard in diagnosing NASH.

However, this procedure has many disadvantages because it requires sedation and includes risks of pain and bleeding after the procedure.

FibroScan now uses the latest technology to assess liver health painlessly and non-invasively in a five to ten-minute procedure.

An HbA1c test is a simple blood test commonly used to help diagnose diabetes. It measures your average blood sugar levels for the last two to three months, and no prior preparation is necessary.

A DEXA scan is an imaging test that measures bone density (strength). DEXA scan results can provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures (bone breaks). This test can also measure your body composition, such as body fat and muscle mass.

The physical exam is an essential part of any doctor’s visit. Surprisingly, though, there are no absolutes in a routine physical. Annual physical exams usually consist of:

History. This is your chance to mention any complaints or concerns about your health. The doctor will likely quiz you about lifestyle behaviors. They will also review your personal and family history and check your current immunization record.

Vital Signs. The doctor may check the following vital signs:

  1. Blood pressure
  2. Heart rate
  3. Respiration rate:
  4. Temperature

Heart Exam. Listening to your heart with a stethoscope, a doctor might detect an irregular heartbeat, a heart murmur, or other clues to heart disease.

Lung Exam. Using a stethoscope, a doctor listens for crackles, wheezes, or decreased breath sounds. These and other sounds are clues to the presence of a heart or lung disease.

Head and Neck Exam. Opening up and saying “ah” shows off your throat and tonsils. The quality of your teeth and gums can also provide information about your overall health.  The doctors may also examine your ears, nose, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid, and carotid arteries.

Abdominal Exam. The doctor can use a range of examination techniques-e.g., tapping your abdomen to detect liver size and presence of abdominal fluid, listening for bowel sounds with a stethoscope, and palpating for tenderness.

Neurological Exam. The doctor may assess your nerves, muscle strength, reflexes, balance, and mental state.

Dermatological Exam. Skin and nail findings could indicate a dermatological problem or disease somewhere else in the body.

Extremities Exam. The doctor will look for physical and sensory changes. They will also check your pulse in your arms and legs. Examining joints can also assess for any possible abnormalities.
